Dear Regina,

Your case study is very interesting. It illustrates a problem that is valid for many parts of the African coast. Increased erosion is also sometimes linked to the installation of control and/or protective structures, which are obstacles to sediment transport. In Senegal as well, the extension of the Dakar port and the establishment of coastal protection structures (breakwaters, gabions) between Rufisque and Djifer have modified the refraction and diffraction modalities along the "Petite côte" (small coast) to the south of Dakar. Apart from these aspects, there is the problem presented by the lack of detailed impact assessments concerning the possible effects of sectoral management plans on the coast. And what about the undertaking of impact assessments along Nigeria's coastal zone?

VERS DES ETUDES D'IMPACT SUR LE LITTORAL?

Votre étude de cas est très intéressante. Elle illustre un problème valable pour beaucoup de secteurs de la côte africaine. La recrudescence des actions érosives est aussi parfois liée a la mise en place d' ouvrages d'aménagement et/ou de protection qui constituent des obstacles au transit sédimentaire. Au Sénégal aussi l'extension du port de Dakar et l'édification d'ouvrages de protection sectorielle sur le littoral (épis, gabions) entre Rufisque et Djifer ont modifié les modalités de réfraction et de diffraction dans la Petite côte au Sud de Dakar. Au-delà de ces aspects, se pose le problème de l'absence d'études d'impact exhaustives sur les effets possibles des aménagements sectoriels prévus sur le littoral. Qu'en est il à propos de la conduite des études d'impacts sur la zone côtière au Nigeria ?
